Bon Jovi at MSG: From the Seats
By: Jodi Rothfeld
Some shows start in the pit.
This one started from the seats with my phone, a packed Madison Square Garden, and a band I have loved for a really long time.
I know there has been a lot of talk about Jon’s voice. And yes, he is not fully back to the old Jon. There were moments he held back. A few notes came with a little extra drama. Sometimes he was a tiny bit behind.
But honestly? I didn’t care.
Because then he smiled.
The band kicked in.
And the crowd had him.
That was the thing that stood out most to me. Bon Jovi felt connected. Not perfect, but connected. The musicianship was amazing, the stage looked great, the screens added so much, and everyone up there seemed to know exactly how to hold the night together.
Opening with “With a Little Help From My Friends” felt like the whole point.
Because if Jon sang out of tune, we were still going to sing with him.
Bon Jovi got me through my teenage years with that corny, lovesick, hopeful feeling. The good kind. The kind that made everything feel big and dramatic and possible. His songs were passion, heartbreak, nostalgia, and hope all wrapped up in big 80s/90s energy.
But “Wanted Dead or Alive” was the moment. That was where he seemed to let go, and the room felt it. The crowd was amazing. Loud, loyal, fully in it. I could not have asked for a better one.
No photo pass. No big camera. Just a phone, a seat, a few videos, and a room full of people singing back.
Sometimes live music is not about perfection.
Sometimes it is about showing up for the songs that showed up for you.
